UN-Habitat, Mobike promote bike sharing

UN-Habitat and Mobike have teamed up to promote bike sharing as an sustainable mobility solution for cities. The Chinese bike share company uses innovative technology to make cycling more convenient for urban residents.

The aim of the partnership is to make urban cycling more accessible, popular and smart while also contributing to a sustainable future for cities, writes UN-Habitat in a statement announcing the partnership.

Bikesharing is an attractive solution in cities facing increasing congestion and air pollution. Mobike’s goal is to make it more popular by turning cycling into the most convenient and environmentally friendly transport choice for urban residents.

Using specially designed bikes equipped with GPS and proprietary smart-lock technology, Mobike users simply need to open the Mobike app on their smartphones to find a bike near them, reserve it and unlock it.

After reaching their destination, the user simply parks the bike by the roadside and locks it, making it available to the next rider.

“Innovative solutions such as those introduced by Mobike are very relevant to the New Urban Agenda and a new paradigm of urban mobility,” said UN-Habitat’s Executive Director Joan Clos.

Under the terms of the partnership, the two organizations will work together to promote and implement bike share systems around the world. They will also contribute to urban and transport planning by co-researching big data for accurate travel pattern analysis.
