Help OceanCare fight for fish

Did you know that fish are highly social? Many live their entire lives in a single swarm. But this characteristic also plays into the hands of industrial fisheries: With echo sounders and electrically charged nets, they systematically comb the oceans for schools of fish. Today, 90% of marine fish are fished to the limits and many are on the verge of extinction.

This hunger for fish leads to a constant increase of fishfarming. But one kilogram of farmed fish requires 5 kilograms of fish flour, most of which comes from wild catches. What is the solution?

OceanCare addresses the problem at various levels:

  • Improve fish welfare: We have submitted a petition to the fish label Aquaculture Stewardship Counci (ASC), asking them to improve the conditions for fish in farms. ASC has announced to make the necessary changes.
  • Less ghost nets: With our partner, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, we not only make sure that abandoned fishing gear is taken out of the seas, but also that new nets are marked and assigned to their owners. As a result, the number of ghost nets, highly dangerous for marine animals, is reducing.
  • Stop the plundering of the seas: We work on policy changes making sure that industrial fisheries respect the fishing quotas and stop plundering the waters of other countries.
