Footwear fights ocean pollution

adidas has teamed up with Parley for the Oceans to create the world’s first shoe whose upper part is made entirely of recycled ocean plastics and gillnets.

Sea Shephard, one of Parley for the Ocean’s partner organisations, retrieved the nets after a 110-day expedition tracking an illegal poaching vessel, which ended off the coast of West Africa.

Parley for the Oceans describes itself as an organisation in which creators, thinkers and leaders come together to raise awareness about the state of the oceans and to collaborate on projects that can protect and conserve them. adidas is a founding member of Parley for the Oceans and supports its efforts to end plastic pollution of the oceans.

The shoe upper is made entirely of yarns and filaments reclaimed and recycled from ocean waste and illegal deep-sea gillnets and showcases the innovative power of the collaboration.

The shoe was unveiled at the UN headquarters in New York earlier this week on the occasion of a high-level event on climate change.
