Coca-Cola launches new Sustainability Action Plan in Europe

The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe and Coca-Cola European Partners plc have launched a new Sustainability Action Plan called “This is Forward”, which sets ambitious new commitments on drinks, packaging and society.

The Sustainability Action Plan sets out how The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe and Coca-Cola European Partners will use their businesses and brands to effect positive change on some of the biggest issues facing society today, with a particular focus on healthy drinks, environmentally friendly packaging and social equality.

When it comes to the company’s iconic beverage, the plan calls for 50 per cent of sales to come from low or no calorie drinks by 2025, an increase from 25 per cent in 2016. The partners will further reduce sugar across their soft drinks portfolio by at least 10 per cent by 2020.

On the packaging front, the partners aim to collect 100 per cent of their packaging to ensure none of it ends up as litter or in the oceans. They will also more than double the use of recycled plastic for their PET bottles to at least 50 per cent and ensure that 100 per cent of their packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025.

On society, the plan calls for an increase in the number of local community partnerships, with a focus on empowering young people and women. The partners will also intensify gender equality efforts by ensuring at least 40 per cent of management roles are held by women by 2025.

According to a statement announcing the new sustainability plan, these three priority areas will be underpinned by three supporting actions on climate, water and supply chain: cutting greenhouse gas emissions from their core business by 50 per cent, replenishing 100 per cent of the water they use in areas of water stress, and making sure that 100 per cent of their main agricultural ingredients and raw materials come from sustainable sources by 2020.

“Sustainability has always been at the heart of our business, and we have made some tremendous progress. But we agree we can do more,” said Tim Brett, president of The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe.

This is Forward defines our attitude to doing better. We are not going to settle for the way things were done. There is no going back now”.

The plan was developed through an in-depth consultation process with over 100 key stakeholders, governments, NGOs and customers, using insights from over 12,000 consumers across six countries and 1,000 Coca-Cola employees in Western Europe.
