Printing a house at the click of a mouse

A Chinese engineering firm has built 10 3D printed houses in just one day. The structures were made out of recycled construction waste and cost less than 4,800 dollars each.

The company behind the 3D printed structures, WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co., used a massive 150x10x6.6 metre 3D printer to create the 200 m2 houses, reports 3Ders.org. The company used recycled construction waste, industrial waste and tailings for the printed material, rather than plastic. The houses are printed in pieces and then assembled on site. Insulation, plumbing, electrical lining and windows can all be installed once the rest of the structure is standing.

According to 3Ders.org, WinSun plans to build 100 recycling factories around China to collect construction waste and transform it into materials for 3D printing. The company estimates that their technology can cut construction costs in half and says it is ideal for fabricating “affordable and dignified housing” for poor people.
